Blue Elbow Swamp

The Blue Elbow Swamp

The Blue Elbow Swamp is a wildlife management area. It derives its name from a sharp bend of the Sabine River. The Texas Department of Transportation purchased it in 1997 to mitigate the loss of wetlands incurred during various highway construction and roadway improvement projects in East Texas. TxDOT transferred the tract of more than 3,300 acres, to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. It is located along the border of Texas and Louisiana.
